Brampton is a small market town east of Carlisle, close to Hadrian's Wall and the Irthing valley. Its octagonal Moot Hall of 1817 still stands at the centre of the market place, and the town received its market charter in the thirteenth century.
St Martin's Church, built in the 1870s, is notable for being the only church designed by the architect Philip Webb, and contains stained glass made by Morris & Co. The town remains a compact centre serving a large rural hinterland.
