Wigton is a market town in the Solway Plain, sometimes called the gateway to the Solway Coast. It has held markets since the thirteenth century, and the fountain in the centre — a memorial of 1872 designed by Thomas Woolner — is one of its best-known landmarks.
The town has a long industrial thread too, with a plastics works that became a major local employer in the twentieth century. Writer Melvyn Bragg grew up in the town and has written about it extensively.
