Keswick lies between Derwentwater and Skiddaw, and its early prosperity came from mining — graphite from Borrowdale, which led to the town's long association with pencil manufacture. The Derwent Pencil Museum records that history.
From the late eighteenth century, Keswick became a centre of Lake District tourism, drawing writers including Coleridge and Southey, who lived at Greta Hall. The Moot Hall of 1813 still stands in the market place.
